I read this book with my class of 6/7 year olds and we thoroughly enjoyed it! The illustrations are fantastic and the vocabulary of the circus gives lots of opportunities for discussion. We particularly enjoyed Nan being a little bit more than ordinary! Here's what some of the children had to say: I liked the end because Mum was like Ninja Nan - LA It was a lovely story! - SJH I liked how Mum and Nan turned into Circus heroes! - FK It was delightful! - GA I liked it when Nan joined the circus. - KW It was brilliant - five stars! AH It was fun and I enjoyed it. - MI It was amazing - AWR
Ninja Nan was reviewed with my school's Year 3 lunchtime reading club. We loved the idea of the Nan having some kind of secret life and running off to join the circus! The bright, bold illustrations were " exquisite " , " amazing " and we especially loved the flying pigs! We loved the descriptions of all the different circus performers and waiting for Nan to appear as the final act. " The book could have been called 'Nanja' as well " said one pupil. We thought the idea of the mum being so worried about HER mum was really funny ! All of the group said they would like the author to write a book called 'Wondermum' next. Some had the idea that Ninja Nan's next mission would be to train her grandson to be Ninja Boy.
This is a lovely book to use with a group of children to lead into lots of book talk/activities about the circus and to look at secret talents we all might have .It certainly made us all show off our ninja moves and want to eat some candyfloss!
Ninja Nan is a book that, when the children first saw the cover, they were very excited to read. They were all so intrigued by the ninja nan on the cover and the book didn't disappoint! The story is about a boy Jim who's Nan leaves him a message one day to say she's now Ninja Nan and is joining the circus.
The children loved the fun and silliness to this book and thought it was brilliant to see Jim's Nan go from a nan like any other to an incredible circus performing Ninja Nan. They loved seeing all of the circus activities nan got up to and with lots of variety shown it gives a good glimpse into what a circus might be like.
The characters of the book are brilliant as we get to see them all go through a big change from an everyday person to an experience in a magical life. At least that's what I see the children thought! Their eyes lit up as they saw all the illustrations from the circus and couldn't believe nan could do all those things. Throughout the book the illustrations are so bright and eye catching with lots of details for the children to look at, they were still busy looking when I'd have to turn the page!
This is a fantastic book that the children loved reading, such a different book to what we've read before and with a funny and entertaining twist. We'd highly recommend this book!
We really enjoyed Ninja Nan - a great story to share together. Every page is completely engrossing thanks to the very vibrant illustrations by Natalie Smillie. Nan is completely normal until the day.....she runs off with the circus (much to the disapproval of Mum)! The story then takes us on a fantastic trip to Nan's new place of work, enjoying all the acts and atmosphere and leading up to Ninja Nan's fabulous finale. As well as a very entertaining story, this would make a great story to share with those visiting a circus as a first experience!
