Street Child by Berlie Doherty is one of the texts suggested by the DCSF for use in schools, namely in upper junior school age range. The story tells the tale of the beginning of the Barnardo's children's homes. It is well written and the read and respond pack offers additional ideas for work on the text and extension activities. More resouces are available to support the text online due to the popularity of the text in classrooms. This is a good place to start for teachers putting together work for use in school, or for parents wanting to support their children's work in school.
Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the skinniness of the book. More content should be in this book for the money.
