in essence - this 2006 book is an excellent , approachable smallish book (9"x5")that contains much concise information + overviews of the history, key directors, top 100 films list as well as an excellent overview of world cinema, in addition to the expected hollywood era. the Eyewitness Companion contains many colour images, is easy to read + contains much quality info on all facets of what makes film such an enduring mass medium far beyond the blockbuster.
over 500 pages providing the entire span of film from its turn of the 20th C origins through to the early avant-gsrde onto hollywood musicals onto the european neo-reaslists + finally onto to contemporary shortlisted films of interest from across the globe. an extensive index of leading directors + films, makes this book a rare joy to use. the complete + welcome antithesis to the cumbersome BFI guide for instance. there is no great in depth analysis as its such a compact book BUT it does offer a wide sweep of the history, best films + most important directors et c in an easily readable attractive format.
highly recommended, particularly for culture obsessives seeking an approachable yet concise film guide without the need to learn any academic cultural/film studies posr-structuralist jargon..
