I am a retired water resources engineer undertaking self study into plate tectonics. This is an excellent book explaining alternate theories for melting anomalies in planet Earth. It is very well written and easy to understand. Before reading this book I was becoming quite confused with information referring to hot spots (used to my way of thinking very haphazardly) and the term mantle plumes being used in a disjointed manner with respect to plate tectonic processes. This book has made it much clearer and enabled me to more critically assess what I read and see.
