The Essence of Goju Ryu Vol 2 is a valuable contribution containing a lot of information that requires an in-depth study and in my view, reading it once it's not good enough. Personally, I have found it very useful as it gave me many ideas about how to improve my posture and get a better feeling for kata. I particularly enjoyed reading the 'defensive principles' section and the concluding parts on kata and breathing. This book gives the reader an opportunity to explore in detail a variety of hojo undo exercises and discover links between various aspects of karate. Photos taken by the authors are a very helpful addition.
What I appreciate about the book is that it kind of provides a 'road map' but it is not a detailed 'manual'. Therefore, it requires an in-depth look and a very personal approach to all exercises. This book contains some very inspiring thoughts and it feels like a lot is written in between the lines and the only key how to grasp what lies beneath the surface is through continual personal practice.
I recommend this book to karateka who seek to improve their karate on every day basis as it will definitely help them on their paths and provide them with better understanding of their practice. It is a treasurable and inspiring book also because it assures that the main principles of Goju Ryu Karate contained and often hidden in a variety of exercises - making this art what it really is - will be preserved in a written form. I am already looking forward to Volume 3!
