I asked my son to get this book for me as a Christmas present. As somebody who has refereed for 5 years myself I felt this book could only be a useful tool. However what should have been a guide for me and for others turned into a nightmare almost from the off. At first I found the many errors amusing but shortly afterwards they became downright annoying. I appear to have the 3rd edition of this book and really must wonder did anybody, from author to publisher, actually ever read it before publication. It is littered with spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and incorrect punctuation. There are capital letters and full stops in the middle of sentences all the way through.

In conclusion I bought this book hoping to gain a little knowledge and perhaps support the author into the bargain. All I got in exchange was a lazily written book that only serves to irritate the reader. Avoid.

Some weeks ago I received a copy of this excellent book written by Fez Barnard.

It fits comfortably in the pocket and is a good read with many excellent pieces of advice.

Fez highlights the reasons why he got into refereeing and thanks the people who have supported and guided him.

I must say that I was delighted to see that some of those names are people who I know and who I have worked with over the years.

These opening pages of thanks highlight how refereeing is not as lonely as people may think.

His inspiration for writing the book came from Graham Poll, former World Cup referee, and Mike Bull, Darren Cullum and Richard Melinn are also thanked by Fez.

The book deals with the experience of that first game, dealing with difficult parents and the need for correct interpretation of the laws of the game.

Fez was clearly prepared to listen and seek out advice during his career.

How wonderful that he took time out to write this book and to share his experiences.

I am passing my copy onto my Thailand colleagues to enable them to take advantage of the advice offered.

For my grandson, who is a professional referee. Some of the situations described in this book have already happened to him and he has been able to act accordingly because of this book. Very fast delivery.
