This book tells the inspiring story of how David Barker's determination, intelligence, integrity and empathy with others led him to overcome the many challenges he has experienced in life.
It reveals how, having left school at 16, David overcame others low estimation of what he should aim for to succeed in the world of new technology, only to find that success in business depends on others, and that while many give encouragement, some are less trustworthy than he has shown himself to be.
Whilst David plans to continue to help disadvantaged young people grow and find the opportunities he fought for, he also wants to continue his contribution to making today's world a better place by entering public life in the City of London.
#eSociety is a very enjoyable read – a personal story that brings some important issues to life. In writing this book, David Barker has struck a great balance in his part-autobiography/part-manifesto approach. The thing that remains with me, above all else, is the simple joy of positivity. David is a living example of the power of positivity – not a blindly so, but remaining faithful and purposeful, in spite of the setbacks life brings. #eSociety is positive about seeking to make a difference for the better in others’ lives. Across government, industry and society, more needs to be done to encourage and empower future generations of young people, as they leave education and look to make their way (and a difference) in the world.
David's book captured my attention from the first chapter, and I finished it within 24hours. He shares some of his highest highs and lowest lows in #esociety. Through examples of how his life took different turns, he also inspires the reader to question their own motives behind decisions (at least it did for me!). Without giving away too much of the content, I would highly recommend this book for anyone thinking they don’t have the power/money/influence to change something and in the same breath to every person eligible to vote for him in the next elections where he will be standing as councillor. If I move again, it will be to his ward!
Have enjoyed this book immensely. An amazing life story which leaves you longing for a world where 'esociety' could become a global reality. Where citizens are empowered, enterprising and have equality of opportunity. David has developed a system of business which offers all of this and more and has then had the courage to put it into practice and to persevere through all kinds of adversity. A must read for anyone who wants to see this world change for the better.
A great read. Once I started I couldn't put it down. It opened my eyes to the prejudice that the underskilled and unemployed face in this day and age. An inspirational story of a man on a fascinating journey which left me challenged to do more for those with less.
I recently met David through working together on a charitable programme and was very keen to learn more about David’s wider work, looking to make a very real difference. In reading #esociety I have been inspired by David’s openness in sharing his story and his ideas for using technology to create a more just and fair society.
This book is a must read for anyone who wants to see things change for the better, a world where anyone can achieve given the chance and opportunities, regardless of their background. David's journey is to be admired and applauded; he could so easily have given up but he has a clear vision. The world needs more people like this.
David's journey is compelling and will make you think about the greater purpose of your life. His passion to see a better world, where justice and equality for all is the common is refreshing and we need more people like him to rise up. A captivating and thought provoking book you will not want to put down.
It was intriguing to read how the life experiences of this entrepreneur shaped his vision for a better, fairer society for everyone. Especially good was the idea surrounding how we can use technology to create an even playing field. We need more people like David Barker.
