Beautiful photographs of the female figure in shadow and light. Only 3 stars as there was no DVD-ROM as advertized.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon 23 November 2011
I'm slightly stunned that someone would give this book a one-star review because it didn't look good on their Kindle. I mean, REALLY? This is a large-ish format full colour book. You buy it for a black and white, small-format Kindle screen, and then give it a bad review because it doesn't look good? I almost feel obliged to give a five-star review to counter-balance that one star.

But actually I'd have been happy to give this a five-star review anyway. Anyone who knows anything about drawing will be aware that there is NO real substitute for an actual three-dimensional model, but if you don't have access to one then this book - if used intelligently - could be the next-best thing.

The book itself is an attractive and durable hardback. Inside, the paper is high-quality and glossy, and the book contains a wide range of poses, details, expressions, and models of various shapes and sizes!

But that's not even half of it - the accompanying CD of images is the real treasure of this package. For each of the (many) poses, there are a couple of dozen photos taken from different angles around the model. This is the nearest possible thing to being able to walk around a model until you find the POV that you want. The CD also includes some other goodies, including a pdf version of the book.

I personally can't find anything not to like about this book/CD combo. It's the first book I've purchased of this series, but I'm pretty sure it won't be the last.

In my original review, I included a video of a 'flick through' this book, to give a better idea of its contents. Amazon initially posted the review, then deleted it some time later - presumably because (shock horror!) it contained nudity. So, sorry, no video. I've uploaded a couple of customer images to give some idea what you'll get on the disk, but if you're still undecided, check out the accompanying website: posespaceDOTcom. From there, it's possible to download a couple of free 'walk around' poses, and get a much better idea what to expect from this book.

Just don't expect it to look good on a Kindle!

Great resource for any photographer or art student looking for inspiration with their models. The book is a collage of images that are included on the disk; the book does not contain all the images.

The models are posed on a turn table and then the photographer has captured an image every 10 to 20 degrees of rotation of the model. This makes about 24 images per model with some models photographed in greater detail or specific anatomical areas covered.

The disc also contains a PDF version of the book which I've copied to my tablet device for quick reference on shoots; I've already done a fine art shoot and drawn inspiration from the book. You can also download bonus models from the website with the code printed in the book.

I highly recommend this book and will be purchasing others in the series.

I have found the Maureen Johnson series excellent. This particular book/dvd combo does a good job of exactly what it says, light and shade.

Yes, I agree that this book and cd definitely deserves five stars. The models are photographed in rotation (from 24 different angles).

A good clear selection of poses, useful to amateur and professionals alike. Brings the guesswork out of the dark at last

Not sure what I was expecting, but it was as the title implies - figures posed in shadow and light. I was hoping to project images so I could then draw them. Result was okish.
