I have suspected Crohn's disease (still waiting for a confirmed diagnosis) and for over 2 months I was unable to eat any food at all, as it would leave me feeling nauseous with lots of stomach problems. I was surviving on Ensure nutritional drinks prescribed by the doctor but continued to feel horrible every day. I spent a huge amount of time online looking at ways I could feel better, and eventually stumbled across this book.
I read it the whole way through, twice, then started the intro diet. It's so important to understand the theory behind the diet, and to do that you really do need this book and not just the website or other website summaries. The foods list could be better organised but that's where the website does come in handy, and the two work very well together.
I am 5 weeks into the diet and am now eating 3 meals a day, plus snacks. Is the diet hard work? Yes, it can be. Food prep takes longer, it's very difficult to eat out and you need to be constantly thinking ahead to your next few meals. However, compared to feeling ill every day and being unable to eat anything, I would take this every time. It is a progressive diet, so at first it can feel very limited, but the only way to really tell if you react to foods is to introduce them back in very slowly, one at a time, which is what I have done. It doesn't take too long before you can have some really satisfying meals (today for lunch I had oven baked salmon with paprika and garlic, butternut squash chips, avocado and some bacon)
I am already feeling so much better, and have started to gain weight again (my weight has dropped to an unhealthy level but is now just about back in the normal range, and continuing to rise) I don't feel anywhere near 100% yet, more like I started at 30% and am now at 65%, but even that improvement to me is huge. As the book says, you need to approach the diet with fanatical adherence, and if you're unwilling or unable to do that then it's not worth doing, but if you are, hopefully you will see huge improvements in a short space of time, as I have.
It's a long term diet - you will not feel 100% better immediately and I think that's important to bear in mind so that you don't get discouraged if you have a temporary setback or flare. It usually takes at least a year for full healing, and can take even longer, so I'm hopeful that I will continue to see my condition improve across the next year or so.
If you have IBD, Celiac disease or any other conditions that cause chronic diarrhea, I would really recommend reading this book and giving the diet your all for at least 3 months to see if you notice an improvement. I know I have already and for me it's been invaluable in getting my life back and starting to feel like a normal person again!
