This review is of the 2005 reprint [paperback edition].
I borrowed a copy of the original 1988 hardback edition to use as a reference work for family history investigation and bought the paperback so I could have my own copy. I expected the paperback to be indentical in every way to the original hardback. however, two key items are missing from the paperback:
1. a very useful double-page map at the front of the book detailing locations of important building such as workhouses and churches
2. an essential ten-page index at the back pointing to people, locations [including individual streets] organisations
Most irritating that these have been deliberately left out. One star deducted for this foolish mistake.
So my advice is: Buy the hardback edition, especially if you intend to use it as a reference work.
