A fascinating book that gives brief accounts of hundreds of Saints, Religious and Martyrs going back 2 thousand years with at least one for each day of the year. Many of those named will probably NOT be familiar to most people generally it has to be said. However I make a point of reading the book before I retire and that way I actually pray for the particular person on the date of the anniversary of his or her death. The stories give details of the persons lives and how something definite happened that caused them to change the manner in which they led their lives, some being soldiers or armed and taking part in conflicts. The more 'modern' Saints are excluded from this volume but I understand there is another book available which includes them.

Wonderfully presented in two volumes on high quality paper with beautiful gilded edges, this gives you saints for every day of the year, at least one in each volume, more on some days. It bears the 'nihil obstat' and 'imprimatur' marks of the Catholic Church. One experiences great anticipation every time one opens the books to find out who is the saint for the day, like opening a wonderful present. The descriptions are brief but accurate and lead one into a greater awareness of the tremendous wealth of saintly example and intercession available to us.

This proved to be an excellent introduction to the Lives of the Saints, each person having a page of biography alongside a splendid illustration of themselves. The Saints vary from the early Apostles to recent people, such as Maximilian Kolbe, and provide a great foundation for further exploration.
