Isn't it ironic that Julius Evola is finding success in cyberspace? Cyberspace being the mob technology par excellence. Still, if you want to see how the other half thinks, then read this guy. A woolly egalitarian he isn't! A smart soul, he definitely is. He died with no kids and probably never had a girlfriend; now that really is dedication to your Weltanschauung! Evola is a breath of fresh air, even though he will always float around fantasy land, not because he doesn't speak truths, but because his system is impossible to achieve in our world. Still, I couldn't help feeling the irony of Evola's hyper-elitism flowering via the egalitarian, and American invented, internet! The net came out of the 1960's counter culture movement and its ethos back then was 'here comes everyone', hence the Internet 2.0. Evola will be turning in his grave (if he wasn't cremated).

Anyway, from what i gather from this great philosopher, Evola is arguing that the idea behind life is that your life is a gap between the two eternities where you actually have a chance of finding out what the hell is going on. But if you're consuming the trash dangled before your startled eyes, then you are living somebody else's idea of what is going on.

Are you not, after all, a citizen of the mystery of life, rather than a consumer of somebody else's idea of what your mystery should look like? Someone else has your transcendence already packaged for you and it resembles a flabby, synthetic, de-caffeinated version of the mystery, were the shopping mall replaces the cathedral as the communities dwell point and instead of working on your fundamental ontology, to free you soul or build karma points, your mortgage is your mausoleum.

Now the point of this free for haranguing is that you arrived from who knows where, you live for a few decades before departing to who knows where. Death if like the singularity of physics, a black hole is a singularity because no information can escape a black hole you see. Our death is the black hole of biology because no information can escape the after death state (forget all the clapping from the New Age section).

So while we exist in this Earth, we wonder the planet, bump into stuff, like startled chimpanzees, clever stuff like Bach or fractal geography, or dumb stuff like consumerism, but it is all our choice, is what I'm struggling to say, rather than the choice of some marketing dude with a focus group. Now it is rumoured than millions of other lucky beings lived before our time and some went on the found empires and set armies marching but a select few became smart and attained enlightenment. You too can bump into the right stuff, follow the path of all those millions who never got the chance of getting it; you have the chance of getting it. But living as a consumer completely avoids the boat. Consumerism infantilises the specie and bleeds the individual dry.

Consumerism focuses' the mind on a downwards spiral of a beastly greed and feed ecstasy, and reduces the human animal to cravings for the baser things in life. This is called downwards transcendent, because there is the possibility of the upwards transcendence. Downwards transcendence is not really a new phenomenon because the ancient Gnostics also believed that we are spirits trapped in a material world. Though by upwards transcendence, I do not mean the worn out and completely discredited wine bottles of organised religion, or the old wine in new bottles me-me-me spiritualism. Neither do I mean menopausal mysticism or celebrity death-worship for dummies (Tibetan Buddhism).

This is a fierce treasure trove of a book that deserves to be read. Even if you yourself do not yearn for Evola's world view (I certainly don't!), still, the reading can still be a reward for this chaotic and tyrannical X-Box reality we are getting sucked into. After all, you need chaos in your heart to give birth to an Evolian star! Indeed you do!

Baron Evola analyzes how brave man and noble women in "modern" Europe, discontent over the loss of order and the desintegration of values, turned to Traditionalism. Seeking guidelines upon which they could model their lives, they found in Traditionalism a means to maintain clear distinctions between the normal and the abnormal, the accepted and the unacceptable, the real and the virtual. An excellent collection of thoughts and ideas discussing the possible rise of Traditionalist elites and the various precursors of future "Conservative Revolution" in Europe (for clear example just see nowadays Serbia). Simply - "NON PLUS ULTRA". And thank your lucky stars because of that English translation!

Evola shows vast erudition in his derivation of the modern world. Referring to myths and history from all over the world he establishes a sound base for his criticism of modernity. A highly recommended work for those seeking a deeper understanding of this modern world and its relationship to history.

I think that for a true understanding of Evola's masterpiece is necessary a strong background of classical culture, as well as of oriental wisdom.
Something of this book could nowadays seem a little bit queer, but it must be kept in mind when it was written, in the '30:
theories like the one about Atlantis were of large topicality.
Moreover, it doesn't describe as human society should be now, but how it actually (according to Evola, ok) was in the past eras.
Another thing that is good pointing out: Evola doesn't invent anything. On the contrary, his weltanschauung cames from the metaphisic of Vedanta, and from the deepest roots of ancient greek culture.
His sense of Sacre, instead comes from the ancient romanity, and this - yes - could sound a little fascist...
However, before criticizing, it would be better to get the right informations - and the right perspective, of course.
Probably, reading only this book isn't enough. I think that one should read "Read the tiger" (written many years later) too, if he wants to get a deeper and more updated understanding of Evola.
Al last, it's worthy saying that Evola was never a member of the Fascist Party.

This book is divided into two parts. The first deals with what Evola sees as the purpose of a "Traditional" Society. The total objective of this society being to reinforce the sacral through orientation towards the "Solar" or higher perspectives. Evola lays down a series of measurements by which we can see if a society matches up to his "traditional" view. These include: a Male "solar" north oriented cult, castes, subordination of women. The second part of the book relates how we have gradually drifted away from traditional societies towards contemporary degenerate ones, examples being feminine Chthonic cults, democracy. At the end Evola quotes the Kali Yuga as proof that we are living in a degenerate "Age of the wolf". Essentially Evola's world view is extreme elitism mixed with mysogyny and an outdated "northern" [...] view of world history...

Julius Evola has written an outstanding book, far more shocking than anything written by his more fortunate contemporary C.G. Jung. If you have enjoyed Ortega y Gasset's "The Revolt of the Masses", you will love this book. A must if you are disenchanted with the modern world, modernism, and silly existentialism.

A book full of absurd pagan nonsense. The writing itself is more obscure and ten times less interesting than Nietzsche. For quality reactionary philosophical theory, look elsewhere.

A picturesque accumulation of pseudo-mystical nonsense, this book bears all the signs of a profound spiritual ignorance of its author, who obviously misunderstood the most elementary tenets of the religious traditions he hijacked for the purposes of a politically and morally doubtful argumentation. "Baron" Evola also seemed to have a rather cavalier approach to intellectual property, e.g. exposing ideas contained in the seminal anthropological study "The Golden Bough" , without acknowledging his debt to its author, Sir James George Frazer.
But what is much worse than all these petty details is that "Revolt Against the Modern World" is actually a symptom of the very disease it pretends to describe: the denial of the True Source of Life, which begins with the hybris of materialism and positivism and ends in the darkness of occultism and magick.
To everyone who wants to know what "Tradition" really means, I most warmly recommend one small book: "The Abolition of Man" by C S Lewis.
