Forget the rest. This is THE encyclopedia of horror films that you need. It covers a wide range of films from the early 1900's to the early 1990's. Each film has a short synopsis plus a review- but don't this this is one of those video review books, its much deeper than that with cross referencing and intelligent comments. Good for the horror film beginner and the expert alike. I can spend a good couple of hours flicking through this book and always find something different. Just one thing...about time for a second edition?

This book is an excellent way of familiarizing yourself with horror movies from the silent era through to the mid 90's. There is much interesting comment and a lot of nice stills. I found more useful in the older sections, as I tended to disagree with much of Phil Hardy's views on the 70's films for example. However, differences of opinion aside, the book has a major flaw that potential buyers should be aware of - in the synopsis part of each review Mr Hardy gives away the endings to each film. This, I'm afraid, is seriously misguided as it puts you aff reading about films you have not yet seen. The synopsis should be, at best, a very brief summary that does not give away the ending.

My verdict: excellent on old movies, not so good on newer ones but beware of the synopsis........
