If you want to get a real sense of what it is like to be in Damascus then this book is for you.Tha vivid descriptions of the sights and sounds are certainly enough to fill the senses.Well done to Ms Joris who inspired me just enough to make my own journey to the gates of Damascus.

It is 8 years since I left Damascus, but reading Lieve Joris's account of her stay with Hala transported me back to those dusty streets, curious eyes and "glitsy" salons; it also resurrected views that I could never have voiced at the time, reading this book was like speaking to a close friend, or even listening to my own thoughts. This is a book that offers a fantastic insight into the lives and dreams of the Damasciene, anyone who is planning to visit Syria should take the opportunity to enter this world through this wonderful book.
But what has happened to Hala & Asma?

Lieve gets right into the culture of the country through the life of one woman. A very moving story from many different angles.
