I loved Joan Aitken's "Jane Fairfax" so hoped for another gem. But this book is so haphazard that there is barely a story line in it, while the liberties taken with Miss Austen's characters are simply appalling. Joan Aitken has not tried to write within the period, never mind within Miss Austen's style (and this is a pity, for "Jane Fairfax" showed she can do both.). She has even brought in characters from another book. I could not recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Jane Austen's work. It is melodramatic, sensationalist, and yet also boring.
