This book was recommended to me by a friend. It is a lovely prayer book, or just as a book to read. The content is as it says - everyday prayers. No complicated, dated words, just great for anybody to use.
This book of prayers has been such a blessing to me. On the day I received it I sat down to have a quick glance through it . Sometime later I looked at the clock and was amazed to see that one and a half hours had passed! I had laughed out loud at some little gems that I'd found and other prayers had moved me close to tears. I realised that other women think and feel the same as I do and I am free to pour it all out before a loving Heavenly Father. It would make a lovely Christmas present for a friend or even a present to yourself and I thoroughly recommend it.
A first glance this looks like a typical pretty gift book. Beautifully produced, with a glossy cover, illustrated pages, hand friendly size, easy to read layout.
But reading it, I found more- there's real substance here. The quotes and Bible verses are thought provoking and carefully chosen. The poem prayers which at first reading seem simple are more like psalms, heart-felt, many layered, and carrying deeper meaning if we choose to seek it.
I like the way it's organised, with sections on our relationship with God, marriage, children, friends, work, church, the world, and growing older. That recognition that we have different needs at different stages in our lives and that we are many women in one is a blessing. We can take those fragmented parts of us and bring them to God, to be whole again.
I'd recommend this book as a gift for any woman in your life, or for yourself.
Disclosure- I was given a copy of the book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
This beautiful collection of Marion Stroud's prayers is interlaced with wise quotations from many people across the centuries. Attractively put together, the book is divided into eight sections covering many aspects and ages of a woman's life, from discovering ourselves, marriage, children and friendships, to life at work, the wider world, and growing old. Life's pleasures are approached with thankfulness, life's difficulties with compassion and empathy. One example, called `The Other Woman', takes you from resentment to understanding. It's as compelling as reading an outstandingly good short story. `It's just you and me, Lord' is a book to dip into, to provide inspiration, and challenges, or to give words to express something that is too painful to face alone. Many of the prayers would be an excellent starting point for prayer groups. Easy to read, easy to comprehend, this book of prayers takes the reader on a journey of understanding and empathy.
These lovely psalms for the modern age have something for everyone, although they will mostly appeal to women (as the subtitle suggests). Longing for dreamless sleep; praying for a friend who's taken a big step (while swaying between awe and envy); the exhaustion you can feel when you know everyone's relying on you; not fitting in; being tempted to gossip...aren't these all things every woman feels sometimes? I defy you not to find something that speaks to you in this book (even if you're a man). Marion's writing is fresh, open, and honest. If I had any little quibble though, I'd say that sometimes I long for a bit of good, solid, pull-yourself-together William Barclay-style discipline, that perhaps these prayers are a little too sweet and gentle and dare I say a little middle class and middle aged? But, hey, maybe that's just me, and these prayers will be just you. Do buy this book - it's very reasonably priced and you won't regret it.
This is another beautiful book of inspirational prayers from marion Stroud. Although I found myself reading a lot of this book in one sitting, this is not it's intended use. The prayers in the book allow you to speak to God and reflect on the issues which arise. This means it is a book which can be used for many years to come. There is a prayer for every eventuality of life. The prayers are intimate, raw and uplifting, revealing much of Marion's own life. The book spoke to me on many levels. The beautifully illustrated cover supports this theme of intimacy and means that this is a beautiful book.
This would be an ideal present for any occasion for women and I can guarantee any woman would thank you for the gift.
