As "hinted" in the title, this book is not a suitable entrypoint unless you're actually interested in, or studying, the period. If you are however, it is a real gem; providing glimpses not only into Gregory of Tours (rather sizeable) ego, but also into the tradition, culture and life in everyday Merovingian France. Gregory is - as always- wonderfully biased, but this does not make the text less useful or interesting if read carefully. The edition is also full of helpful footnotes, making it a useful reference-point for anyone studying the period.
