I expected a factual history but it turned out to be more of a liturgical fantasy. I'll have to look elsewhere for a history.

This is a very readable version of a fascinating story which fills in the blanks of a largely forgotten period of history. Approach it in the knowledge that it won't read like a modern history book, but is very much coloured by the limited world view of the author and his contemporaries. The style may be seen as being heavy going, but it's relatively short length and fast paced progress from chapter to chapter make it well worth the read.
