The struggles around Guillemont during August-September 1916 was one of the great Somme epics. This good account explains why the battle went on for so long before the village was captured on 3rd September 1916. Good maps and photos. Also contains routes for first time visitors. A must-read.
An ideal publication for those visiting the Somme in the area around Guillemont,Trones Wood area. The Trench maps are very useful in cross referencing other acquired information on names of trenches if you are trying to locate where a relative was last known to be,as was my case, and the process is not an exact science,as every trench is not named in this publication. The book arrived in the post a couple of days after ordering and was used to good effect on my visit to France. Very good service
Another well researched and written book by Michael Stedman, in which he clearly sets the scene and proceeds to tell the tale of the actions in the Guillemont area. The maps are well presented, titled and annotated. Individual stories are well researched and presented. Good to see some of the books in the series are now available in the Kindle format, well done Pen and Sword
This book details what happened in one part of the front on the Somme. Detailed and horrific. Hell on earth. Several VCs are described including the only man to receive a VC and bar. Instructions for visiitng are given.
