The Australian Force fought some of the worst battles during July and August 1916 whilst attempting to clear the Pozieres Ridge and expose the left flank towards Mouquet Farm. This very good informative book explains in much detail the actions that took place around the Pozieres area which cost the Australians 23,000 Casualties before they were relieved at the end of August. Their sacrifice cannot be understated. The battleground remained in a dreadful condition for years after the war, and even nowadays there are still traces of the devastation of the area. There are some very good photographs and details of walks which are very useful for not only the regular visitor but also first timers. Very good maps available too. And of course the numerous Memorials and Cemeteries are detailed with much information especially of some of the VCs who didnt survive. A good read, and an excellent contribution to the Pen and Sword Series.
This needs more space and a review will appear for the book separately. It is from the Battlefield series of Pen and Sword. We will be using this book for a visit to the Pozières Battlefield later in the month. Some of these books tend to put too much detail in and the maps are limited in size and orientation. However a more comprehensive review will follow in good time. It must be said that if ypou are visiting the Battlefield going without one of these books is not a good idea.
