Written to cover American models, so details may vary. Otherwise, a good manual.

(I got fed up with Haynes manual, which suggests Golf GTI starter motor is next to exhaust manifold......)

All the information you need.
As an owner of a USA model VW this is the best USA and Canada model specific workshop manual out there.

I have the Beetle version and have bought this as the haynes manual didn't cover hardly any of the electricals...unlike this book which covers everything...to the point of my VW buddies nabbing it to solve their problems. If you own a VW of any description invest in the offical service manual it's worth it!

This book would seem to be very complete, but on closer inspection, describes only models as specified for sale in the USA. There are likely to be many small differences between European and American specifications, which will limit the book's usefulness to a non American owner. Most especially, it is of very limited use in fixing carburettor fuel system problems - USA cars were all fuel injected, even back in 1985. European/UK cars were usually fitted with carburettors. At least, mine was (choke problems were reason for purchase), correspondingly, I returned the book.

I think this book is a must-have for anybody who pokes around the inside of their Jetta (or Golf or GTI). Not only does it contain the standard tear-down diagrams, but outlines tests on the car's systems and has charts for diagnosing trouble. (What's that noise?) It's all written in very plain English and is almost always very detailed (although its does have a few lapses). It saved me a pile of money I would have otherwise given to my dealer.

Although pretty much everyone in the uk will go out and pick up a haynes manual before anything else, I strongly encourage you to get one of these. Aside from a couple of lhd/rhd differences due to the American bias, these manuals are leagues ahead of the haynes in almost every respect. After a lot of work on these cars I can honestly say that the bentley is by far the best resource available.

I own several hundred manuals written by a variety of authors and publishers. Bentley rate amongst the best. A great deal of info on EVERY subject. Very readable with clear pictures for those of us who need them! Again worth every penny.
