This book is a difficult text for a first timer to sociology. On the other hand, it is very useful to the PGCE student as essentail reading and for background knowledge needed for essays.
I recommend that a newcomer to Sociology will firstly read a good A Level text on the subject matter before tackling this book.

Although the books reviews of previous editions proclaim it to be a wonderful introductory world of Sociology of Education, it is anything but. More often that not, the authors take an idea and proceed at great speed to spout out a load of waffle. The sociological concepts discussed, are discussed badly. There is little in way of examples to explain complex terms. And after reading it i have been left more confused about the Sociology of Education than ever before. If you are stuck for a book that explains education extremely well, making good use of evidence and succeeds in explaining education in just over 100 pages then read Sociology: Themes and Perspective by Haralambos and Holborn; this book achieves what A Sociology of Educating cannot do in over 500 pages.
A Sociology of Educating is overall a badly written and as such limited in its use unless you have exceptionally good attention skills. Beyond that, for the general sociology student it will only achieved in one thing - giving you a headache.
Save your cash.

This book is very informative and gives an overall brief on the sociology of education. It will be very useful for my MA in Education this September.

This book shown is the 5th Edition and states 2007. The book I was sent was out of date and of no use as its a 3rd edition from 2001. Very disappointed considering I paid the price of the advertised 5th edition! False advertising and a scam! Hoping people are dumb enough not to notice.. I needed this for Uni and am now left with nothing and £25 down!
