is an essential introductiion to the spiritual and perhaps more subtle side of the art. Although well presented and relatively lengthy in written content, it is a translation from the Japanese original. I found it must be approached with an open mind. 12 chapters cover various aspects such as the history of the art, ninjutsu in relation to other martial arts, taijutsu, and the spirit of Ninjutsu today as compared with the past. There are many short stories, often hiding clues to the true spirit of the art while they are also a welcome break in the overall structure allowing the reader to reflect more deeply on what they have read. It will be more useful to someone who has started practicing the art first. You should buy this after NInjutsu : History and Tradition.
it is rare to pick up a book which leaves you ready to go back to page 1 start again and be the better for it. well Hatsumi sensei is just that type of author. Althought a must for the budo practitioner it is a worthwhile read for anyone. Its only a pity that the author has not translated all his books into English.
I found this book to be enjoyable and informative. As a student myself I found it to give a marvellous overview of the art as a whole although it does tend to require study rather than idle skimming to get the most benefit but the extra effort is well worth it. This is certainly a book I would recommend to fellow students although not so much to the casual lay person as some prior knowledge of the subject is a great asset before reading this book.
This is a special book indeed. If you're expecting to have the fundamentals of Ninjutsu handed to you on a plate, you will be baffled and disappointed. Hatsumi writes in metaphors and allegories designed to distill the essence of this noble art directly into your subconcious. You're not supposed to understand it all the first time round; the point is to read it, forget about it, then go back to it at a later date with fresh eyes and understanding. Ninjutsu is an art of the heart, so don't fret, for though this book may confuse your mind (and so it should), your heart will understand it.
Ninjas are ace! This book is full of wisdom. I will not criticise the writer in any way because he is a Ninja. It is very hard to become a ninja. This book illuminates something of the spiritual wisdom at the root of the Ninja path, without in a grandoise way going on about trifling displays of physical prowess. Good! The only criticism I can make is there is perhaps something a little bit American in it. Aside from this, faultless, and very good ancient stories. If you are a sensible person you like ancient stories.
This Book is great, not a combat skills manual but full of cheeky stories and interesting tales of jutsu and spiritual things. The aurthor has taken great detail to outline the true path of the Shinobi and enlighten us all with his meticulously written book. I miss not reading it as it was very interesting and Dr Hatsumi wrote it with a good positive outlook that makes you understand the mindset of a real life sensei. Great read, very interesting, well worth the small fee to own!
Very much in the spirit of TAO takes some reading and is very deep but stay with it and you will find a wealth of information and phylosophy whic can bee applied to all aspects of your life, also you can read this book time and time again and no two times are the same there is always something new that you missed the last time well worth every penny.
My training and studies into Ninjutsu have been completely changed by this book - it provides an fascinating insight into the concepts within Ninjutsu and Soke Hatsumi himself - this book's really inspired my training and personal life!
