good introduction to Japanese culture
on 29 December 2012
According to the introduction, this collection of essays was written by undergradates studying Japanese culture. This set my expectations low.
In fact, the essays are insightful, light on sweeping generalisation (easy to do when writing about distant cultures), rich in detail, and with a strong conclusion, or thrust, to each chapter, such that you really feel that you have learned something at the end of each chapter.
I suspect there were strong interventions from the editor (their university professor), which accounts for the quality and uniformity of style. But nevertheless, tasking undergraduates with writing for publication is an ambitious project and this has been very well executed.
