Space Mission Analysis and Design - "SMAD" to its friends, is an outstanding text. It covers all aspects of mission design, including planning, risks, orbit design, and the engineering. Core spacecraft subsystems are dealt with by experts in a concise and easy-to-use way; each system with it's own chapter but managing to remain an integrated text. An example mission, "FireSat", follows through each stage of the mission design process illustrating the necessary steps. If you haven't a clue how to design a space mission, this is where to start. If you've been designing missions since you could crawl... the reference information alone is worth having.
The only points that might put you off are the price (get somebody else to pay for it - it's worth it) and the fact that it is always going to be hard for a text covering all aspects of space mission design to maintain concurrency with state-of-the-art. If I were Larson or Wertz, I'd be thinking about another edition pretty soon, covering more of the '90s scientific missions; science missions are altogether more interesting from a design and analysis point-of-view, which is the point of the text. However, given that most readers are probably concerned with fairly sensible earth orbiting craft, the thorough discussion presented should not be neglected! Guess it might just have to get bigger and better.

Anyone studying space engineering knows that SMAD is the bible for us!! I ordered this book for my Masters course and have enjoyed reading it even out of University times. Great aid for newbies but also technical enough for more advanced readies. Book arrived before the expected delivery date, well packaged and in excellent condition.
