This is a must to read. Its a compilation of all the Spider-Man civil war and some of the key characters getting to gether, teaming up and swapping tech.

If you want a quick injection of Spider-Man and a light dose of the avengers then this is the graphics novel for you.

Many strong things have been said about this volume and sxpecifically, it's ending, so here's my take...
While the end result is an unbelievable let down and slap in the face, the writing itself is not as bad as it seems. Now let me qualify that. I hate what Joe Quesada made happen, but JMS did all he could with it and there are some beautiful emotional touches. Had the ending changed and Aunt May had died, believe me, you would be reading some totally different reviews.
Even before that doomed segment of the story, the rest of the volume is not bad. No it does not reach the heights of volumes 1 and 2, but it's better than volume 4 in that it's much less of a mess.
My final thoughts? I have two.
1. We can only imagine what the end result would have been like if JMS was left completely alone to do with what he willed with no interferance.
2. The irony of ironies is this. Joe Quesada's main argument for the whole 'Brand New Day' thing was to take Spiderman back to the essence of what he was, because he had 'drifted away' from what made him a great character. BUT the thing is, 99.9% of that 'drifting' had actually happened under Joe Quesada's watch in the first place; Becoming an avenger, the metamorphosis etc. It was a crass solution to something that HE had created!

If your an old hat to spider-mans run and missed a tome to your collection, DO NOT BUY THIS! If your a new reader and are in need to get to grips with the current status of a character you've heard so much about, DO NOT BUY THIS! (although if that really is you then read Spider-Man: Brand New Day Volume 1 TPB: Brand New Day v. 1 (Spider-Man Graphic Novels (Marvel Paperback))) If you are looking for expensive and uncomfortable toilet paper or want to read a book that fly's in the face of ethics, good taste, respect for the readers and years of built-up characterization then buy this AND THEN SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH YOUR LIFE!
