A very clear and helpful presentation of T/A in practice. The author's examples and illustrations of the developing counselling relationship are useful and make a lot of sense. I bought this as a kind of "beginner's guide" to seeing how T/A works in practice, although for myself I'm studying within the person-centered perspective so some of the actual *practice* of T/A came across to me as a little too 'directive' for my own personal tastes.

Amazon review

I am a specialist in addiction, weight loss, health & wellbeing and better relationships...

I have a particular slant because I am looking for one sentence to justify the cover price and I will encourage you to buy the book...

That's it - there are many different types of reviewers - I happen to be one that is grateful for the opportunity to have access to all this wonderful knowledge, to learn and to share what may be a life changing snippet of knowledge...

I must also mention Ian Stewart is my current mentor, trainer and clinical supervisor so this review will be very biased in favour of buying this book over and above my normal rantings and ravings about Transactional Analysis.

Ian Stewart has a very particular way of wonderfully imparting knowledge whether that be in person or in his writings.

He is also very clear in the way he delivers the information and is joyful to watch as a trainer and therapist.

Transactional Analysis Counselling in Action is a fantastic addition to your collection and is a very handy reference source.

It is now in its third edition and is split into 2 main parts:
The TA Framework and The Process of Counselling with TA.

Part 1 is really about what makes TA such a useful theory and Part 2 shows you how to apply the theory.

This book will help you even if your framework isn't TA because a lot of what Ian discusses is relevant in all change work...

And I really need to mention "change work". TA is a theory geared up for change and it works.

Sometimes we are not aware of the price of change - so be careful of what you wish for...

Lots of one sentence therapy here...

"Experience has shown that without this consistent practice, there is a considerable chance the person may slip back into his old scripty strategies."

Script is just a way of explaining we have created a story to make meaning of our life and that we can change the story through awareness, practice and change strategies. Most people are unaware that they have created a story as this can be done out of awareness and yet we live our live constrained by this story...

Anyway, rather than give away the plot in your own life script - why not buy this book and become skilled at uncovering your story and also the story of those you choose to work with.

You may even want to create a happy ever after ending...
