Ages of Chaos is an omnibus edition of MZB's stories of early Darkover: Stormqueen and Harkmistress. Both stories are set during the Ages of Chaos - the period from about 1000 years after the colonisation of the planet, when the breeding programme for Laran (telepathic ability) and warring between kingdoms was at its height. Stormqueen is the story of Dorilys, a girl whose inbred talents can cause lightning storms. Hawkmistress (which I enjoyed more) is about Romily MacAran, a tomboy who is able to control animals and birds who escapes from her arranged marriage into a more dangerous life.
Unfortunately, the editing of this book is really appalling and looks like it was done with a spell check programme (eg. "yes" instead of "eyes"). However, it's still a relatively cheap way to get two novels that have been otherwise out of print for a while.

A warning first: if you're not familiar with Darkover, this is not the place to start, as reading "Stormqueen" will make you feel like you've been thrown in at the deep end! That said, these are fun books: "Stormqueen" dark and angsty and dramatic, "Hawkmistress" a nice take on the old girl-dressed-as-boy-falls-for-handsome-prince plot (with an unexpected ending). Nice historical detail for fans of the series, and thumping plots beside. Definitely a recommended read.

I'm a great fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover books, and I really enjoyed this. Set in the early days of planet development it answers lots of questions about the breeding programmes used for the development of laran and of the hideous weapons in use before the Compact came into use. Very good.
