Great for the beginner
5 July 2013
Coming from a family of bowlers and thinking of taking up the game myself, I felt that I needed a helping hand to find out all the facts that are essential to this challenging but little known sport. When hearing my family talk about bowls, I felt a little bit lost. They were so familiar with all the jargon and rules that they seemed to think I should be too. However, when they were really active bowlers, I was too busy to go watch so missed out on learning that way. The feeling that I was playing catch-up was not pleasant and I didn't want to ask about what seemed to be the fundamental basics, fearing that I would be laughed at for not being aware of them. I therefore turned to Amazon to find out if there was any reading material that would help.
Short Mat bowling is a popular alternative to indoor and outdoor bowls, played mostly in church halls so it has its own rules and regulations and its own particular style of play. It is very hard to find advice on this type of bowling (as a trawl of the internet turned up little of real value) and I feel that this may be due to the fact Short Mat doesn't get the recognition that other forms of the sport get. This book, is therefore, a very valuable guide, resplendent with photos and good explanations. There is also advice on how to select appropriate bowls in addition to playing advice.
Whilst the seasoned bowler may find it too simplistic, to the beginner it is an essential piece of kit - especially if they have no one to turn to to ask or of they want to go prepared before joining a club. This is one purchase I won't regret.
