By far the worst book in the sequence
on 23 March 2018
the Dark is Rising is a classic and a masterpiece. The other books in the sequence are very engaging and multilayered if a bit Enid Blyton in places. But this one is just a jumble. Far too many themes, locations, plot threads and twists and turns. I only finished it out of a sense of needing completion. It is only briefly engaging in parts and it is vastly overwrought. The mythical layer feels as tired and tattered at the end as the characters do. It just does not work like the other books in the sequence do. It has the feel of something that you make that you are not happy with so you keep on adding to it and adding to it and trying to balance it but end up slamming against your deadline with only a great tottering mess that really needs scrapped to be started afresh entirely. Sad that a work of genius ends this way.
