Mostly excellent, some stinkers. Always engaging.

By some margin this is the better of the two "Restrospective" anthologies and contains no less than 4 award-winning short pieces. Sadly missing from both volumes are Martins really early works, from 1971 and the few years after that -- they are among his finest writings and you can only get hold of them at the moment in a small collection called Songs Of Stars And Shadows. They include FOR A SINGLE YESTERDAY, NIGHT SHIFT, MEN OF GREYWATER STATION -- the stories that first got him noticed. Not included here!!!!
Mostly excellent stories, well written and good ideas -- but there are a few stinkers, as you always get in compilations like this. The story "Bitterblooms" is, for instance, a fine example of "well written rubbish" -- no real idea behind the story but it gets wri about anyway, and some halfwit editor bought it off him. Ah well, nobody said the world is perfect. Always with Martin, though, a thoroughly engaging read, whatever the actual story content of his narratives.
