A very interesting and Scholarly book about a very relevant subject- a very good insightful writer whose style is sympathetic to the plight of the Poor in London during the Victorian Era. History warts and all.
I'm struggling with this book. It's a shame because the subject interests me but this just isn't well written. There's a great deal of repetition in the vocabulary used and its clumsily put at times 'landlords,or as they were known in the language of the time 'housekeepers' (p21). This book deserved better editing. Very disappointing! I recommend outcast London or the infernal wen. Far superior writing.
