Good beginning not lived up to.

I thought I was going to like this as it had ingredients of spy stories from before the advent of the internet, when they suddenly became boring.
(Code name) Peanut, who might have been an agent for the British, has escaped after 20 years in a prison in China and has had to do things the old fashioned way as he knows nothing of the working of mobile phones, etc. Getting to grips with all the Chinese names and places reminded me of how I used to struggle with Russian names in the Cold War spy stories, but soon forgot their difficulty as I became more and more embroiled in the story. Sadly, that's where the similarities end as after several days I have given up half way through.
The main problem for me is that I am finding the characters one dimensional and really don't care that much what happens to them. The author has a strange style of writing that I can't seem to get used to and nothing much seems to be happening. After such a promising start with Peanut's escape I found this disappointing.
