Unfortunately found this book a bit dull as it focused more on the military manoeuvres of the regiment rather than the personal side of paddy I feel the author was genuinely trying to set the record straight but as a result the book didn't flow Some areas could have been gone into with more detail and a more perceptive authorr could perhaps have unearthed more interest than plain fact For example Why was Mayne not awarded the VC or What was his opinion of the regiment being disbanded ? These could have been given a lot more more focus However still a worthwhile read of one of Britain and Ireland's true heroic warriors of the 20th century

What should have been an amazing story on an amazing character gets bogged down too much on how the administration of the sas worked. Not enough detail on how the raids that the sas went on during the war are included. If you want to know how army admin works then this is the book for you.

Paddy Mayne was an incredible man, a credit to the SAS and mankind. A fighting machine that was not afraid to do anything and his country and himself. His relatives must be very proud of him. I am and I’m not related.

In an attempt to appear squeaky clean and not seen as cashing-in on the Paddy Mayne story, Ross has made this book rather sterile.
However, that said, it is good to read something like this, as, being (I'm going to use this word, but I mean it as a complement) "boring", it's not all machine-guns from the hip, carrying two men 100-miles across the desert with no water and a bullet in his shoulder-type stuff.
It's good, honest reporting.
Very interesting, really, and it shows Paddy to be a real human-being, after all, and not this super-human, bullet-proof gunslinger that the other "truth-about-the-SAS" books would have you believe.

The book is fact after fact and he said, she said with little story telling which can get monotonous. I looked forward to this book but was disapointed
