The first two chapters of this book are an excellent starting point into the expansive world of wavelets. The text is well written and understandable (a relative rarity in this field!) and focused on the practical application and engineering aspects of wavelets. Several worked-through examples greatly help understanding. One great lack is any coverage of biorthogonal wavelets or their use in the JPEG2000 standard. The book would greatly benifit from a chapter on wavelet-based image processing in general. However, this book is very useful and worth the purchase.
