The first edition of this book permanently sits on my side table as a go to reference. It will finally be dislodged by this wonderful update. It's a classic of coaching and developmental texts.
John Whittington manages to pull off a remarkable double act in his writing. He both creates an invitation to think and coach from an entirely different space (giving insights into how this can be useful to you in growing as a coach and how you can create client spaces that offer the opportunity for transformation), and he provides several practical guides ("how to" instructions, step by step interventions, example case studies). In this sense this book is both transformational and highly practical.
The new chapter on Belonging is greatly appreciate, and provides a jigsaw piece that I now see was not fully present in the first edition. Belonging, "innocence" and "guilt" are hidden forces that pervade organisational life and (dys) function. Understanding and learning to work with these forces will be valuable to both coach and leader.
This is the first and best book I ever read about systemic coaching. I was amazed to discover the team dynamics and how the role that each individual plays can influence the whole system in profound ways. Being aware of organisational and group dynamics can be life-changing.
I must admit, I enjoyed this book thoroughly. John's theoretical model is clearly defined from the outset. Based on that model he goes into a wide variety of simple to use constellation moments that can be used with both individuals and with groups. He gives the beginner tools that can be easily used from day one, and refined with experience. There are other issues that he might have included in his theory, but the book in of itself is a big enough starter to constellation theory that you might not even need the main course or the dessert.
A clear and practical guide to systemic coaching and constellations, which is excellent as both an introduction and an ongoing reference guide. The second edition includes a new chapter which is relevant to working with clients from many areas of commercial life. One of the few books which isn't often on my bookshelf - it sits on my desk as a frequent and highly readable reference.
This is THE book I was looking for years about Systemic Coaching and Constellations. The author not only provides an easy reading but, at the same time, deeply packed with examples, exercises, tips and many other resources. I just started integrating some of the contents in my work of Human Performance Facilitation and the results are amazing. In one word: Brilliant!
I had the pleasure to recently attend John's course on this topic. John is truly a reference in this field. This book has been a great complement in re-affirming what was taught and experienced during the course. It is a good guide/handbook to keep referring back to when developing one's own approach to integrate the systems part. I also really like the fact that it was easy to read, giving practical case studies and showing you how to "start from the start" when experimenting with the approach on one's own clients. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in exploring systemic coaching and constellations.
John's clarity around this complex topic is extraordinary. This is a must-have text for anyone interested in the use and workings of constellations in coaching, the balance of theory and practice with case examples is particularly useful.
There is not a wasted word in this guide to systemic coaching and constellations. It is clearly written and full of case studies and exercises to help the readers understand cognitively - and through embodying the experience. I will go back to it frequently as a reference.
