I bought this as my choice for our 'Book Group' on the strength of the other reviews and it was an Amazon recommended read as I had highly rated Daphne du Marier's Rebecca.Being nominated for the Booker and Whitbread prize also supported my choice but what a disappointment!
The best description for this book was that it was dull, very dull. As there is no plot the story is character based. Unfortunately the characters are not well developed or described. We were unable to picture them in our heads as there was limited physical description of them, except for maybe the 'mistress' toward the end of the book.
As a group we felt the author had been unable to evoke empathy with any of the characters or their situation. Indeed the author failed to inspire any emotions in us to make us want to read on and find out more.
On a positive note there is a lovely reflection on what freedom is around three quarters of the way through but there was just not enough in this book to sustain our interest.
Our book group has 11 members and I am afraid to say no one enjoyed this one.
