This is an exhaustive and comprehensive history of the Frankfurt school, investigating both the evolution of the ideas and the development of the individuals (Adorno, Fromm, Marcuse etc.) both separately and collectively. Wiggerhaus's style is eminently readable, and this is essential for anyone fascinated by The Frankfurt School as well as readers interested in the history and evolution of philosophical thought in the 20th Century (and many of the critical theories themselves remain vital and relevant to the present day).

Full of gems about the Frankfurt School that I really didn't know about. Very thoughtful and interesting and very scholarly.

Very strange that the President of Frankfurt University refused him access to the archives though!
