This is not a cookbook for converted raw foodies, it's rather for those those interested in eating a healthy HIGH raw vegan diet and eventually going completely raw. There is a wealth of information on nutrition, raw food and veganism in the first section and it goes on to suggest a 21 day meal plan, which is very helpful for those like myself just starting out into the world of vegan and raw food. The recipes are a mix of completely raw meals and of raw food with some cooked wholes grains, beans, pulses and tofu. There is a section on the essentials; can't live withouts such as almond milk, cashew cheese and basic green smoothies, a section on dips and dressings, a section on salads and a section on desserts. The rest of the book is split into 3 levels with level one recipes intended to guide you into the world of vegan and raw food. Level 2 is designed to take you out of your comfort zone, help you to think more "out of the box" and wet the appetite for raw food. Level three is called "Brave New World" and is full of raw food recipes and techniques. This is a great resource for the fledgling vegan and I absolutely love it. I am only giving it 4 stars though as although the 3 levels of recipes are nice to start with, it can be a bit bothersome at times when you just want a nice lunch or dinner recipe as they are scattered throughout the book. Each level is split into breakfast, lunch and dinner, making it difficult to browse just for dinner or lunch ideas. A table of contents at the beginning of each level would have been helpful. Aside from that, this is a great book chockablock full of information and lovely recipes.

I've read Gena's Choosing Raw blog for years so I was excited to receive this book and it certainly doesn't disappoint. Gena's writing is clear and concise and her enthusiasm for the subject shines through. I usually get bored when cookbooks (especially healthy/vegan ones) have 50 pages of techniques and ingredients information to wade through before getting to the recipes, but the introductory information here is useful and Gena explains the reasons behind her dietary choices without guilt-tripping or haranguing the reader.

I haven't had time to try any of the recipes yet but they are along the lines of the recipes on her blog (from which I have cooked/un-cooked before). I like the format of the recipe section which splits it up into different levels of 'rawness'/complexity rather than by course. This makes it very easy to pick recipes from the first section and introduce more raw/vegan foods into your diet, without feeling like you have to dive headlong into 100% raw foods or you're not getting the benefit.

Definitely worth 5 stars

I was really looking forward to this book arriving, as I am a devotee of the raw food diet and the write up sounded good, but unfortunately I was a bit disappoined. Some of the recipes in the book are not raw. I haven't made any of the recipes yet due to time, but the photos look very nice, it is just that the book is not as advertised.

Lovely book but I find it a little disjointed as there appear to be too many sections each containing savoury and deserts. I prefer things to be more logically ordered.

The recipes however a great and it is also worth noting that quite a lot of the recipes aren't strictly speaking raw. BUT it is a great way to introduce more raw into your diet and as the book offers alternatives to using some of the more expensive pieces of kit raw foodists have i.e. a dehydrator it makes most of the book viable in a standard kitchen set up.
Beautiful photos and the recipes I have made all worked well.
3 stars due to disjointed layout

Arrived very quickly. It is a great book with lots of lovely pictures and useful information but eating raw seems like too much hard work for me. I'll stick to a steak I think. But, if you are thinking of going vegan and raw, buy it.
