Having been a fan of Miss Sitwell since my student days it was with great pleasure that I cam upon this BBC archive recording now available on CD. I have an ancient vinyl copy of many of the tracks reproduced here and having long since abandoned any device that will play vinyl I bought this with much anticipation.
The sound quality, though not perfect, has been cleaned up and is really not bad for a 60 year old recording.
Not only does Dame Edith read her fantastical, often surreal, verses but also introduces them giving context and credibility to them. I would hope that her legacy is not lost ~ I am told that she is "out of fashion" nowadays ~ what a condemnation!! Any young and aspiring poet could do worse than listen to this grand dame explaining the use of her internal rhyme and musicality of these beautiful poems
