Grace and Family is a book written by Mary Hoffman. It is the sequel to Amazing grace. It has beautiful illustrations by Caroline Binch.

Grace lives with her mum, her nana and her cat Paw Paw, but she doesn't live with her papa. This is the story where Grace gets to travel to the Gambia to meet her dad and his new family. Grace has very definite ideas about what a family should be, she thinks all families should have a mum, a dad a brother, a sister and a dog! Read this book to find out how her experiences in Gambia change her mind.

My favourite part is when Grace gradually realises that having a new brother and sister isn't that bad after all! Grace makes a fantastic big sister, she tells Nenah and Bakery all the stories she knows.

This is a very emotional story. I could really understand how Grace was feeling when she first arrived in the Gambia, she must have been very home sick. With the help of her Nana, Grace is able to realise that a family is what you make it.

I would recommend this story to any child whose own family lives in different places. It could really help them understand their own situation.

I would rate this book 5 stars, everyone should read it!

Bought this for a Gambian school I support as Grace's dad is Gambian. You can imagine the children's looks of delight when they saw pictures of things and places that are familiar to them.

Nice to have stories about black kids, which creates a good balance in our multi-racial society.
