I have visited southern Africa four times, the last time I used this book. It is better than Newmans as the illustrations are sharper and more realsitic with identification pointers for those difficult species. The species texts are brief and seem to have been lifted from Sincliar's photographic guide. The book is good for an African field guide but falls well short of the standrds set by Mullareney et al's Bird Guide.
The taxonomy is a little out of date now, although the paperbaxk Third edition is more up to date but it is still going to show you most of the species you will see on a visit south of the Zambezi.
I have a real affection for this book and it will always have a place on my bookshelf. When I revisit the region covered, however, I will use a more up to date edition.
