With this novel Charles deLint has left the familiar home of his Newford writing and taken us to the Arizona deserts. Strictly speaking this is probably a Young Adult novel with the usual coming of age themes but the interweaving of both local desert mythology and Asian mythology adds a touch of magic to the story. The young hero is Jay-Li who has what looks like a dragon tattoo on his back - except Jay is the yellow dragon. The town Jay ends up in is held hostage by gangs, the confrontation with the bad guys comes as you would expect - but really this is one more step along the path of jay's coming of age tale as Jay learns to master both his powers and his relationships. As always with Charles de Lint's writing I was quickly and easily drawn into the story and read it in a couple of days.
