This book cost me 1p, so I can't really complain about the value. Nonetheless, it has dated badly, as many things have since the 1950s. Insofar as the different genetically engineered humans in the story can be considered human races, Blish is making a statement about racism (don't do it), but the individual stories I didn't think particularly good. I have already given it away. Typically for the period, the cover art is spectacular but has nothing to do with the story.

One of the best series of short stories ever written!

These four short stories, sharing the same premise, are among the most imaginative and profound in the genre. The book is superbly written. I have returned to it many times over the years. An absolute gem.

Read it back in the 70`s, but lost it. This copy was just as I remembered it and the price (1p),unbelievable.

Written at the beginning of the genetic engineering era - a vision far in advance of current technique that may only be decades away.
