Like Andersen, Wilde is best when he is winking at the adult over the child's shoulder. Among this insipid company The Remarkable Rocket gleams wickedly. Among other mots it's the origin of that unedifying phrase about work being for those with nothing better to do. One cannot help in the end feeling sympathy for said rocket, a horrid cross between the Red Queen and Lady Bracknell - a moral tale indeed, like the best fables, but probably not for children. The only time the feeble pictures momentarily flicker into life is with the appearance of Death on page 108
