Interesting play not as good as Deathtrap but has a flavour and with the right actors could be intriguing if not a much else.

Veronica's Room is a stage play presented here in script form. It's not a murder mystery as such but rather a clever and complex story constituting murder, mystery, suspense and incest. The general theme of the story is dark and tends to get quite bizarre and creepy towards the end.

Without giving too much away it revolves around two couples, old and young, who meet during the 70's. The older couple convince the younger female character to dress up and act as a girl they once knew in the 1930's called Veronica. The author manages to keep the reader guessing as to which of the eras the events are taking place in and what is real and what is fantasy. As the play progresses it starts to take a somewhat disturbing turn when we find out the reasons behind the older couple's resolve to make the girl impersonate Veronica.

The play is a good read as you would expect from Levin and I kept wanting to read on and on as the story got complicated. However, I personally felt that the reasons behind the events are simply given at the end rather than explained. This as such leaves the reader guessing as to what would prompt such peculiar and strange actions by the characters. Nevertheless, I have given it 5 stars simply because of its originality and for it being a good quality and compelling story with some very sinister and creepy tendencies.

Excellent short read. Ira Levin is a brilliant writer in my view. Even though it is a screen play, well worth the read. Not bad value for money. Shall be passing this on to my mother, I know she'll love it too.
