I have to disagree with those who left a single star in reviewing this. I have just seen the play at the Gielgud and felt compelled to buy the script immediately afterwards. I find it a very intelligent, sharp and funny satire, a truly excellent work that the actors have taken to a higher level. I wholeheartedly recommend both the book and play! You'd be all the poorer for missing either.

The book is funny and witty. Set in modern time it is always current. Makes me watch the play. Excellent.

This edition was published in 2010 and has been superceded by a 2012 edition, which expands and brings the politics more up to date, and changes some of the issues that are dealt with to reflect current sensibilities. Anyone wishing to perform this play is strongly advised to acquire the 2012 Acting Editon.

While I am a huge fan of Yes Minister and can recommend the "Diaries" especially, I really cannot recommend this play.

While it tries to be up to date by mentioning the banking crisis, global warming and the like but the main story is not only weak but also very unfunny. Sir Humphrey's speeches are still very eloquent but devoid of anything witty or clever. Instead of the usual portait of a stuggle of Hacker's drive towards activity with the Civil Service's desire for inactivity, the play revolves mainly around an uninteresting central plot theme simply there to give the characters the opportunity to make a few quotes on a variety of subject. In the end, not even this main plot is not even resolved properly.

The most positive thing I can say about this book unfortunately is that at least it stopped me from spending money on actually seeing this play in person.

Not as great as the original tv series, but worth a read.

BEWARE. THIS IS THE FIRST VERSION OF THE PLAY AND IS NOT THE ONE YOU WILL WANT TO PRESENT TO AN AUDIENCE.

I choose one star because there was not the facility for Zero
The paperback is so badly made, after only two reads the pages were coming away from the spine, could not be used for our production of the play.
After many years purchasing from Amazon suppliers this is my first disappointment.
Manufacture of this paperback complete rubbish, obviously no quality control in its making.
