Brilliantly written, brings a proud period of British Military History vividly to life. Reads like a fast-paced novel but thouroughly researched and well sourced. Even if you're not into military history this is a great read. Mark Urban's best book.

A classic tale of a soldier in the Rifle Battalions in the Peninsular war and on to Waterloo. Gives a frank and often very full commentary on the officers and rankers, their lives, loves and their actions both on and off the field of battle.

This was an excellent account of the 95th in the Peninsular. Well researched and well written, more like a Bernard Cornwell than a serious work of research, it read like a novel. My only criticism, the footnotes were too laborious
.

Remarkable story a real pleasure to read through this , so many facts and a link to people from history in the letters and remarks made by the main characters. Could easily have carried on reading this despite sadly turning the last page.

In an authoritive style the story of the 95th is recounted in detail, bringing the characters alive you can't help celebrating their achievements and being despondent when their achievements were not recognised

A very well written history of the 95th Rifles during the peninsular war. If you liked the Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell and want to find out more about this real history this is the book for you.

Great companion to the Sharpe novels. Well written and accessible history of the Riflemen. You can almost read it as a novel, because the various characters are so well drawn.

The attention to detail is great and the view from the actual participants brings home the reality of this conflict as apposed to the fiction of say Cornwells Sharp novels.
