Brought back cherished memories of my favourite childhood poems. Walter de la Mare should had been appointed Children's Poet Laureate (if he wasn't)

TOP 50 REVIEWERon 23 April 2017
Walter de la Mare is one of those twentieth century writers who's in grave danger of being forgotten in this century, for no particular reason, since he was one of the most fascinating short story writers and a very fine, accomplished poet, as this selection makes clear.
It's quite obvious from even a cursory reading that he championed children, underdogs, the poor, and others whose voices always need to be heard.
His rhymed poetry staves off tweeness simply by being so good, with a deceptively dark side exemplified for example in his most famous {and much anthologised} poem The Listeners. He also wrote for and very much included children, and his poems for younger readers are as delightful as the rest.
Every poetry library ~ do people have such things any more? ~ should include at least one book by de la Mare.
This one will do nicely.

The two-star review must surely refer to another edition. My copy shows the same high standards of production used by Faber in others of their recent paperback poetry editions - a big advance on their quality in the 80s and 90s. Tough card covers, permanent paper, and even a sewn binding! The typeface may not be inspiring, but it is distinctively Faber, and the print is large and easy to read. As for the selection itself, I find that it captures the essence of Walter de la Mare's poetry (even if a few of my favourites are missing), and smoothly mixes the poems for adults with those for children.

Although I hope my Mum will enjoy reading her favourite poems, the presentation of this book was extremely amateurish----the pages were like a poor photocopy. Disappointing.
