Although a little slow in places and a bit too long overall this is a masterpiece. It has such a shocking ending that I immediately re-read the whole book to pick up on the many clues given throughout the book that hint of things to come. The book jumps between the present and past in a way that left me in awe of the planning that must have gone into this story. It is a complex book that covers a host of themes...the Vietnam war, religion , family , death , love , childhood and is both the funniest and saddest book I have ever read. Owen Meany is the central character , a boy who like Steve Martin in the jerk has a " special purpose " , although a very different and much more serious one. Owen has many strange character traits .. his size, his unusual voice , his many strange obsessions ..and the book only reveals the reasons for these in the last few pages in what , for me , was the greatest ending to a book I have ever read. The only other book I have read which had as big an impact on me as this was catch 22 , a similar book in many ways in that it mixes laughter and sadness in a unique way. This book appears on many of the greatest ever books lists and after reading it can now fully appreciate why.

One of the best books I have ever read. I read it on vacation, picked it up and couldn't stop reading. John Irving is a genius in the way he creates credible characters who embed themselves in your mind and become real

Well written book, worth reading but just not my sort of book. Slightly disturbing. Nevertheless a clever idea. I read it because someone recommended it and they loved it.

After reading the blurb for this book I didn't know what to expect. And I still don't really know how to explain what it's about! It's unique. And beautiful. I'm sure it will stay with me for a long time. Definitely a must read.

One of my favourite books - a long read but well worth the effort as you follow two friends with their childhood friendship continuing into adulthood. Every part of the story is painstakingly being paved to the conclusion of the story and it is utter genius of John Irving who ties all the ends together. I have re-read this book a few times now and I always seem to get another nugget of wonder each time I read it
